Motown Monday with Ne-Yo

By Marcus Samuelsson | June 12, 2012

Ne-Yo gives an impromptu acapella performance.

Being in the restaurant business you never know who might walk through your doors. What I’m learning about the entertainment business is, you might know who’s performing, but you never know what to expect. This past week Ginny’s hosted two incredible artists from opposite ends of the spectrum–Jimmy Scott gave us three great performances (being 86 years old this was quite a show) and Ne-Yo hosted Motown Monday.

I want to thank Ne-Yo up high for being here–his energy and enthusiasm brought out the crowds and there wasn’t an empty seat in the house. As Vice-President for A&R at Motown, he brought up Kevin Ross (this kid’s got serious talent) then introduced Elijah Kelley, his co-star in Red Tails. It was Elijah’s first ever public performance but you would have never known it. From his soulful singing to him doing backflips off the banquettes, the crowd went wild.

These two young artists are on the rise and I’m excited that Ginny’s is a place that’s cultivating new American talent. It’s great to see Ne-Yo inspire other guys from the Compound team to want to achieve as much as he has. I’m looking forward to the next Motown Monday and seeing the next Marvin Gaye or Diana Ross get their start on the Ginny’s mic.
