Yes, I’ll be the new judge on ABC’s The Taste and I couldn’t be more excited and thrilled to join Anthony, Nigella and Ludo for this battle of bites. If you’ve seen me lurking in and around restaurants and bars in LA it’s because I’m there now filming Season Two, and I’d love to know what bars, restaurants and neighborhoods I should go check out. Thanks to all for the support!

Hooni Kim was set to be a doctor when his obsession and passion for food took over his medical studies as an undergrad at University of California at Berkeley. The NYC native packed up his books and headed back East to enroll at the French Culinary Institute. Born in Seoul, Korea, Hooni moved to NYC at the age of 10 and it’s where he decided to set his roots by opening Danji in Hell’s Kitchen and more recently, Hanjan, in the Flatiron District. Following graduation, Hooni did rigorous stints in the kitchen at Daniel and Masa, two three-star Michelin restaurants, where he learned to perfect his technique and style. But he couldn’t leave his Korean roots for long… Read More

With the paperback version of “Yes, Chef” coming out on May 21st, I’ve been thinking a lot about the book tour that took me all around the country. At the time I could barely think ahead more than one day as we plane’d, train’d and automobile’d back, forth and back again. But as we prep for Part II of the tour for the paperback version, it’s been fun to think about all the adventures I had with my team who was on the road with me. So much fun, in fact, we did a video about it. Check it out. Read More

Marcus in LA: Post & Beam Dinner in Baldwin Hills

By Carla F. Williams | March 5, 2013

Post and Beam main

Chefs go tete-a-tete menu planning before dinner.

It was delicious magic in Baldwin Hills last night when Master Chefs Marcus Samuelsson and Govind Armstrong shared the kitchen at Post & Beam Restaurant to benefit the Careers through Culinary Arts Program (C-CAP). A long way from Harlem, Chef Samuelsson took the flavor and flair of Red Rooster across the country to team up with Chef Armstrong to celebrate Black History Month through a culinary lens, while reaching out to help the next generation of chefs realize their dreams though C-CAP, which helps underserved high school students train to enter professional kitchens and ultimately compete for culinary scholarships. Evidently, this event was years in the making and the kitchen was filled with very lucky and hard-working students dressed to the nine’s in their chef’s coats, standing proud and ready to work alongside the chefs. From Huffington Post: Diversity, Determination and Dedication in the Kitchen

Marcus James Beard

This was first published on Huffington Post on February 21, 2013.

It’s not uncommon that people will ask me which black chefs I admire—that answer is easy. Patrick Clark, the venerated chef of New York’s Odeon and Tavern on the Green; Sylvia Woods, my Red Rooster neighbor who was and still is a part of this Harlem community for over 50 years; Edna Lewis, the South’s answer to Julia Child; and Leah Chase, my mentor and New Orleans great who inspires everything from Disney movies to Treme. I know I stand on these chef’s shoulders and I can continue their path to inspire and aspire young black chefs. Read More
