Grammy winner Fernando Otero

Grammy award winner and Argentine composer/pianist Fernando Otero found his voice as writer, musician and bandleader when, at the urging of one of his music teachers, he began to incorporate the indigenous sounds of his native Buenos Aires into his work, as he did in his Nonesuch debut album, Pagina de Buenos Aires, in 2008. Mr. Otero has collaborated with flautist Dave Valentin, pianist/film composer Dave Grusin, and has sat in with Arturo O’Farrill’s Jazz Orchestra during their Sunday night residency at New York City’s Birdland while also performing his compositions with large jazz ensembles at Lincoln Center and Symphony Space. Called “disorienting and fascinating” by MOJO magazine and a “refreshingly slow answer to our trashy nanosecond pop culture” by Time Out London, French pianist Elan Mehler and his jazz quintet are bringing an exclusive New York premiere of compositions to Ginny’s Supper Club on July 30th that lean towards the thick blues of Mingus and Ornette. This will be the very first performance of these new works composed over the last year in Paris. This new musical project is a definitive departure from his earlier work and will feature his incredibly talented cast of musicians: Jeremy Viner on tenor sax, Alan Bjorklund on trumpet, Tod Hedrick on bass and Max Goldman on drums. Born in South Carolina and bred in New York, Georgia has been singing her whole life. She developed her skills as a jazz and pop vocalist, leading to her winning the legendary Amateur Night at the Apollo Talent show. As a professional vocalist, she has been cast as a vocalist in the Broadway hits “Eubie” and “Bubbling Brown Sugar.” Starring in “An Evening at the Cotton Club” as Bessie Smith, Georgia toured throughout Europe entertaining audiences with high-energy performances of jazz, blues and gospel tunes. Georgia, winner of the Blues Hall of Fame award, has performed with Dizzy Gillespie, George Benson, Fathead Newman, KoKo Taylor and Stanley Turrentine, and now she performs with our own  this Sunday, May 27th at Ginny’s. As described in Ralph Cooper’s book, she is “The Last of the Red Hot Mama’s”!

Monday Nights Red Rooster Harlem and Ginny’s are home to the 7-piece Rakiem Walker Project, who take audiences through a rich stylistic journey of African-American music. From gospel to hip-hop, Cannonball Adderly to Jay-Z, this band takes no prisoners as history is its groove. The group features a roster of talented musicians, including the well-known street saxophonist Rakiem Walker, who has been the musical director for several projects including the MTV-sponsored Blusyde,and pianist and hip-hop producer Enterfied “The God of Sound” McCloud, whose credentials include touring with and producing Erykah Badu, Bilal, the Game, and Jadakiss. Also prominent in this group is the young vocalist Latoya Kennedy, whose sultry voice overlays and blends the instrumentation perfectly. With three horns, a rhythm section, and a talented voice in their arsenal, this group’s rich sound and diverse set of music, captivates audiences on Mondays, promising an uplifting start to each week.

This incredible American vocalist needs no introduction: The legendary JIMMY SCOTT descends upon Ginny’s for a special three-night engagement on June 8th and June 9th (all shows at 8pm). Ginny’s Supper Club is honored to host “Little” Jimmy Scott as he performs hits from his 70-year career as a prominent player in music history.

Having performed with Charlie Parker, Sarah Vaughan, Quincy Jones, Ray Charles, and Lester Young, JIMMY SCOTT is also a favorite of contemporary talents like Lou Reed, Elton John, Madonna and Flea from The Red Hot Chili Peppers. Who can forget his singing of “Why Was I Born” during President Bill Clinton’s 1993 inauguration? Ginny’s is proud to be able to showcase this 86-year-old maestro and you’re invited to spend a wonderful evening at our Supper Club with great cocktails, spectacular food and a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. A special menu will be created for this legendary night so we encourage you to come enjoy the night with us.
