Caffeine junkies unite! Whether you drink premium organic Peruvian Coffee or rely on coffee alternatives for your morning boost, most people turn to caffeine for added energy in the mornings (or late in the afternoon) to get them through the day. But drinking coffee may have more of a benefit than just trying to stay awake at work as it contains some health perks as well.Â
The average American consumes around four 8-ounce cups of coffee a day. Research shows that coffee drinkers, as compared to non-drinkers, may have health benefits including being less susceptible to type-2 diabetes, Parkinson’s disease, and dementia as well as have fewer instances of certain cancers and strokes. It’s all due to the antioxidants in coffee, which are basically nutrients that help prevent damage in your tissue and muscles as well as fight toxins in your body. Minerals in coffee like magnesium and chromium help promote insulin usage, which in turn will lower blood sugar levels.
Be forewarned though: caffeine is a mild diuretic, which means it will make you hightail it to the bathroom more than you would without it. The diuretic effect is based on caffiene content, which means that decaf coffee has essentially same effect as water. However, both regular and decaf coffee contain acids that can make heartburn worse. Also be careful in what you put in your coffee as the calories can quickly add up. A 6-ounce cup of black coffee contains just 7 calories, which gets bumped up to 23 or 46 calories when you add a teaspoon of sugar or half & half, respectively.
Keep in mind that now that it’s summer, it’s best to choose iced coffee so that your body temperature stays cool. It’s really easy to make your own at home. Simply brew a pot and cool it to room temperature. Pour over ice and enjoy! You can also make coffee iced cubes to reduce the dilution.
