Black History Month: Person Of The Week, Will Allen

By mahir | February 8, 2011

February is Black History Month, and to celebrate and honor the achievements of the many black leaders in the food community who inspire me.  This week, I am featuring Will Allen, CEO of Growing Power.

Farming in urban areas seems like an impossible proposition, but Will Allen is helping to bring fresh produce to low-income neighborhoods. Featured in Time’s “100 issue” of “people who most affect our world,” Will Allen is making a difference every day in these communities. As CEO of Growing Power, a nonprofit organization that inspires “communities to build sustainable food systems that are equitable and ecologically sound,” Mr. Allen is changing the way we look at food in cities.

In 1993, Mr. Allen owned a farm and started working with Growing Power to provide teens with a chance to learn about sustainable food. Begun as a simple program in Milwaukee, Growing Power grew into a project of national scope.

A former professional basketball player, Mr. Allen has won the Ford Foundation Leadership for a Changing World Award and a MacArthur Foundation “Genius Grant.” He is an inspiration to all who aim to improve the lives of those living in poverty. Deeply committed to bringing great food to urban communities, Mr. Allen is a man with vision and willpower. I look forward to watching Mr. Allen and Growing Power continue to change urban life for the better.
