NBPA Hosts Its Annual Great Turkey Giveaway At Red Rooster

By admin | November 24, 2011

Yesterday was a grand day for Red Rooster Harlem as the National Basketball Player’s Association held its annual Great Turkey Giveaway and press conference at the restaurant. Every year the NBPA hosts a Turkey giveaway just before Thanksgiving as a way for the players to give back to the community and this year they held their altruistic event at Red Rooster. The Harlem community lined up along 126th Street as NBA player Charles Jenkins and Marcus passed out turkeys to those waiting.

Executive Director of the NBPA Billy Hunter started off the event with a press conference alongside Roger Mason from the New York Knicks and Charles Jenkins from the Golden State Warriors. As mentioned by Hunter and Mason, although this year the NBA finds itself in a lockout, that situation in no way deterred the players from wanting to give back to the community, especially during the holidays. The Great Turkey Giveaway is one of the organization’s favorite philanthropic events, as they giveaway around 9,000 turkeys nationwide. In New York alone, 1,000 turkeys were handed out to needy families while the other cities participating in the giveaway included Atlanta, Los Angeles, Houston, Miami, Ft. Lauderdale, and New Orleans.

Although no negotiations have taken place in the NBA lockout since the lawsuit filed last week by the NBPA, Billy Hunter and the players want to reassure basketball fans everywhere that they will work tirelessly for negotiations to ensure for a 2012 NBA season.
