Tomatoes are one of the top foods to grow in gardens and it’s really no mystery why: whether you think of them as a fruit or vegetable, they are a delicious snack. There happen to be many varieties both large and small so no matter what the size of your garden is (even if it’s just a fire escape!) you can grow them. Here are some things to keep in mind when growing and how to make them into tasty recipes:Â
* Tomatoes come in all sizes such as cherry, small, medium, and large. Bigger tomatoes need at least 6 hours of continuous sunlight so if your garden has a big tree that overshadows, you should stick to the smaller varieties.
* For city dwellers with only a small balcony or fire escape, try planting cherry tomatoes or one of the dwarf varieties in a pot. Make sure your pot is at least 15 gallons or get a pre-made tomato seedling case. This way you won’t have to worry about germinating the seeds and just have to remember to water it once a day.
Don’t forget the most important part, cooking with your tomato bounty:
* Once your tomatoes are fully grown, they’ll be ready to consume. This summer salad recipe is a great way to put those tomatoes to the taste test.
* You can also take a page from the Italians’ book and throw together a refreshing Caprese salad consisting of tomatoes, basil and mozzarella cheese. Drizzle on some sea salt, balsamic vinegar and olive oil to finish.
* Roasting your tomatoes and putting them in a polenta dish with springs of rosemary will sure to not only wow your taste buds but your friends as well.
