Top 5 Food Movies

On nights when you just don’t feel like cooking, a great food movie can sometimes make up for a lackluster dinner. These are my top five food movies:

5. Mostly Martha: In this flick about a female chef in Germany struggling to run her restaurant and raise her niece, Martha must find a balance between work and her personal life. With fantastic food and a fascinating behind-the-scenes look at a restaurant’s operation, “Mostly Martha” is a good Saturday night movie choice.

4. Diner: Although “Diner” doesn’t make a lot of top food movie lists, this movie is at least as much about the food as the characters. In this classic coming-of-age story, a simple diner serves as a hangout for 20-something men. From coffee to the entire left side of the menu, the amount of food consumed in this movie is incredible.

3. Julie & Julia: Directed by Nora Ephron, this film tells the story of blogger Julie Powell as she tries to cook through Julia Child’s Mastering the Art of French Cooking. While Amy Adams delivers a solid performance as Powell, Meryl Streep’s portrayal of Julia Child is amazing. Watch Julie & Julia for the delicious French food and Streep’s performance.

2. Ratatouille: Although Ratatouille initially seems like a kids movie, the beautiful representation of a French restaurant and touching look at what it means to be a chef will keep adult entertained, too. Thomas Keller consulted on the film-he even designed the ratatouille dish featured in the movie.

1. Soylent Green: This campy cult-classic is about a world in which food as we understand it no longer exists. Instead, citizens subsist off of generic food products harvested from the ocean. Charlton Heston stars alongside Edward G. Robinson (in Robinson’s last ever film appearance). When Heston brings Robinson a jar of strawberry jam, an impossible luxury in their dystopian world, Robinson delivers one of cinema’s most moving food related performances.
