When I make a sandwich, I like to add a little savory pizzazz to draw out the other flavors and stimulate the palette – there is no such thing as “just a sandwich” in my book. Try these healthy treats to top off your bread-surrounded creations.
Vinaigrette: Mix two parts olive oil to one part vinegar and season to taste salt and pepper to taste in a cup or small container, such as a small Tupperware. If you have a water-tight container, seal it and shake for about 10 seconds. If you’re using a cup, beat quickly with a fork. Use a spoon to drizzle this on one of the slices of bread, which will soak up the liquid and its flavor nicely.
Greek Yogurt: Just use a knife to spread this creamy, protein-packed treat on a slice of sandwich bread. It adds a great consistency and rich quality to any sandwich without bumping up calories or preservatives like mayonnaise might. Fold in chopped herbs for extra flavor!
Dijon Mustard: Any mustard is a great addition to a sandwich, but Dijon-style can be used more sparingly without sacrificing flavor. Dijon mustard’s kick amps up a sandwich and is a great compliment to a wide variety of deli meats, such as sliced chicken or beef pastrami, and fresh vegetables.
Corn Relish: This little-known condiment is a Southern specialty featuring corn, bell peppers, onions, and vinegar. Corn relish has an awesome savory quality with a bit of a punch. It goes great with fresh vegetables like lettuce and tomato and deli meats like roast beef. You can make your own or search the product out at any grocery store.
Penzey’s Sandwich Sprinkle: This Midwestern Company, now seen in multiple locations nationwide, has a fantastic herb sprinkle that is a great way to top off any sandwich creation or even salad dressing and homemade croutons. Their secret combination (ingredients listed on the jar) turns bread from dull to dazzling!
