Weekend Activity: Smorgasburg in Williamsburg, Brooklyn

Delicious food and drinks on the waterfront over looking Manhattan’s skyline. What could be better?

If you’re looking for something to do this weekend and you’re in New York City, there’s a great free event for you to check out. Smorgasburg, a new food market in the Williamsburg neighborhood of Brooklyn, has up to 100 vendors and is open every Saturday from 9am to 5pm. An offshoot of the popular Brooklyn Flea, which spends Saturday in Fort Greene, Brooklyn, and Sunday in Williamsburg at the same location as Smorgasburg, this market is an “all-food bonanza” according to the flea’s website.

Not only can you buy delicious meals at Smorgasburg like a lobster roll from Red Hook Lobster Pound or a hot dog from The Meat Hook, the market brings together artisan food producers and farmers from the region. Stroll around the market, grab lunch, and leave with groceries and delicious products like jams from Anarchy in a Jar or ginger syrup from Morris Kitchen.

Welcome to Smorgasburg! The sign beckons food lovers to enter through the markets gates. No entry-fee required, just stroll in.

Maple Bacon Cupcakes from Kumquat Cupcakery. The cake is flecked with cinnamon and has a great maple flavor. Topped with vanilla frosting and a slice of bacon, this cupcake is every salty-sweet dessert lover’s dream.

Maple syrup from Consider Bardwell, a farm in Vermont. It doesn’t get much more New England-y than this, and the stand also has delicious cheeses.

A lobster roll from Red Hook Lobster Pound. On a hot summer Saturday, there’s not much better than a lobster roll, the taste of summer. It’s particularly nice to enjoy this seaside specialty at Smorgasburg, which is on Williamsburg’s waterfront.

If you’ve ever had a pupusa, a staple food from El Salvador, then you won’t be disappointed with this rendition from Solber Pupusas. Similar to a tortilla, but filled with a variety of ingredients such as meat, beans, or cheese, the pupusas are topped with pickled onions, jalapenos, sour cream and hot sauce. This is a great option for enjoying on the patch of grass right outside the market.

A hot dog from The Meat Hook. This Brooklyn-based butcher shop has an excellent reputation for their products from housemade sausages to sustainably raised beef.

Doughnuts from Clinton Hill’s Dough. Renowned for their fluffy, yeasted doughnuts, the line was always at least ten strong during the entire day. Flavors include Lemon Poppy Seed, Dulce de Leche with Almonds, and a magenta-colored Hibiscus flavor.
