I never realized there are actually people who exist in this world who don’t want death-by-chocolate cake for breakfast…until I went to visit my friend Cate and she looked at me with the craziest eyes I’ve ever seen when I ordered a cinnamon raisin bagel with strawberry cream cheese for breakfast. Apparently, she’s one of those people.

This didn’t bother me much until last week when I was trying to figure out what to bake for an 8AM class that I’m TA-ing this semester. I remembered Cate and her savory breakfast needs and promptly started to hyperventilate.  Nope, the chocolate chip muffins I was planning on bringing surely wouldn’t do.  These cheddar scallion scones, though?  Perfect!  Read More

I don’t know about you but I always need (alright, want) a little sweet sumthin’ in the afternoon. It doesn’t really matter what it is – it could be a medjool date, a piece of fruit, rice cake with a skim of nut butter and no added sugar jam or a raw bar/ball.

I discovered raw balls well over year ago now and immediately fell in love. Sometimes called fudge babies due to their fantastically chewy texture, these little beauties are great for a mid-afternoon pick-me-up. Read More

When I’m baking I like to keep things as simple as possible. I’ve never tried my hand at a triple-layered cake nor a complex tart involving handmade pastry, but what I have made plenty of, however, is cookies. Lots and lots of yummy vegan cookies.

Cookies take very little thinking power and don’t require a massive amount of skill in the baking department so I often turn to them when I need something sweet but don’t want to spend hours in the kitchen. Read More

Lemon-Lime Basil Sugar Cookies Recipe

lemon lime basil cookies

Culinary confession time: I really, really dislike shortbread cookies. Even though my mom makes a mean lavender shortbread, I’ve just never understood why people enjoy eating sandy, flavorless, crumbly pucks. I could go on, but I’ll spare you more complaining. I refuse to eat them, so I most definitely refuse to bake them.

That’s why, when I came across a recipe for lemon-lime basil shortbread cookies in the July 2011 issue of Bon Appetit, I was initially disappointed-why ruin three absolutely stunning ingredients by using them in shortbread, of all things? Read More

Blackberry and Apple Crumble Recipe

It’s blackberry pickin’ time again! Not only that but the weather has taken a slight turn for the worse here, meaning fruit crumbles are firmly back on the dessert menu!

I adore crumbles and, even more so, I adore blackberries; but on their own they don’t make for a great crumble filling because they lack texture and bite, which is why I’ve paired them with apple. Read More

Super Moist & Chewy Apricot Walnut Cookies Recipe

Apricot Walnut Cookies

This recipe started with a craving for cookies and a box of McCann’s Irish oatmeal. I saw the recipe on the back of the box, used it as a basic starting off point, and then found myself substituting and adding to it left and right. Luckily, these came out just right: soft, chewy, and very much like muffin tops. Since they are low in sugar, they are good breakfast cookies. Enjoy them hot out of the oven with some jam or butter!
