Many people often say that the one thing that can unite different cultures, even if the location, language, or customs vastly differ, is food. Clearly, every person eats and many cultures tend to have similar strong connections with food, even if the ingredients are different.

Similarly, most individuals have numerous passions in life, but it’s rare to see a seamless combination of them or transition from one to another. One exception, of course, can be between different arts since the common thread between all forms of art is creativity.

One particular chef at Red Rooster, Rory Young, has learned just how to combine not only cultures but also passions in life. Coming from a different culture than he was raised in, and having experienced different careers, Rory has now learned how to adapt to different customs, cuisines, and arts. Street Culture In Motion: Interview With Swedish Filmmaker Teddy Goitom

It’s often said that the way to get a real grasp of a new culture is to take a look at its street culture. In a country’s streets is where you’ll most likely find its true popular culture, what interests its people, its local art, and its most genuine food. Very often, it’s from the streets where the hottest new movements come from and the first to witness a phenomenon in its original street stage are sometimes only a privileged few.

But one media company is working to change that “privileged few” concept and are drawing attention to street culture from all around the world in hopes to educate people of new countries, cultures, and arts through curated videos that anyone can view online. That company is STOCKTOWN and one of the masterminds behind STOCKTOWN.com is Swedish filmmaker Teddy Goitom.

Teddy along with other film friends and enthusiasts created STOCKTOWN, a curated video magazine for culture in motion and since its recent start has continued to grow in popularity, eliminating the boundaries and cultural walls between countries forming a worldwide community of viewers. Just recently, STOCKTOWN was proud to announce their launch of the newly renovated site and in honor of Swedish National Day today, we want to bring attention to this awesome video web site that was born on the shores of Sweden with a one-on-one interview with this Teddy Goitom himself.

Young Harlem Leaders Learn Rules of Engagement at Red Rooster

As Mary Crane, stood in the center of Red Rooster’s Private Dining Room, dozens of little eyes were focused on her, intent on not missing any gesture or detail from her next phrases. The gestures and advice that was dished out would normally not catch the attention of this age group (around 17-18 years of age), but those eyes were fixed and at full attention. Ms. Crane went on to explain the proper way to place your napkin on your lap, which bread plate and beverage belonged to your place setting, and even the American vs. the European way to hold and use silverware. The girls of the Young Women’s Leadership Network watched, took in the suggestions, nodded in agreement, exchanged giggles amongst each other and put these “rules of engagement” into practice.

Last night, Red Rooster was home to the Senior Dinner for the Young Women’s Leadership Network (YWLN), a network of 5 all-girls public schools that provides economically disadvantaged girls with a high-quality college preparatory education. This particular group of high achievers chose to do an internship as their Senior year project and were being rewarded with a private dinner at Red Rooster Harlem. Read More

Lenox Coffee: Bringing Coffee Culture to Harlem

Opening a new business can no doubt be a challenge, but if that business has always been one of your goals in life, no matter what challenge comes your way, you’ll do whatever it takes to get the job done.

After much research followed by even more toil, Aaron Baird and Jeff Green opened Lenox Coffee on 129th and Lenox Ave last December. Open for nearly 6 months now and working past the normal headaches that come with opening your first business, Lenox Coffee has become a beloved neighborhood spot for coffee in Central Harlem.

The shops quaint and cozy atmosphere proves just what the neighborhood needed since it can always be found full of locals and even passerby tourists sipping on their signature mochas or munching on some mid-afternoon sweet treats. Artwork from Harlem artists can be seen adorning the walls, which only furthers their growing sense of community attachment.

From dill-infused vodka to fig-infused bourbon, liquor infusion is becoming a tradition in its own right at Red Rooster. Although it’s becoming more popular now, alcohol infusion dates back centuries and is ingrained in some cultures, like the process of making Aquavit in Sweden.

With the warm weather approaching, many of us flock to our all-time favorite cold beverage- iced tea! But with all the sugar-laden powders and bottled iced teas out there, the iced tea we all know and love has turned into the latest unhealthy soft drink. If you read the label of these so-called “teas”, you may notice everything but actual tea leaves in it. From artificial sugars and preservatives to “fruit and tea essences,” the dangers of drinking these can actually outweigh the benefits.

When brewed properly, tea is actually one of the healthiest beverages you can drink since its rich in antioxidants called flavonoids. These are most potent when tea is freshly brewed and can ward off against the aging effects of pollution and help prevent cancer in the body. Those are only a couple benefits, even more include reducing your risk of health disease, building stronger bones and teeth, boosting your immunity and your metabolism to help you maintain a healthy weight. Eating For Under $10 in Flushing

You know that craving you sometimes get for authentic Chinese food? Not the greasy-house-special-fried-rice-and-duck-sauce-stuff, but the real food that if you live in NYC would have to trek all the way down to Chinatown for. You know the kind I’m talking about- those perfectly pan-fried dumplings, the warm steamed pork buns, and the meticulously-cooked Peking Duck hanging from the window of a restaurant that’s been in the neighborhood for years. Well luckily for me, I don’t have to trek to Chinatown for it, and living in Queens, I don’t even have to trek to Manhattan for it. Queens has its own special Chinatown, or should I say Asiatown, in the city of Flushing and as luck would have it, I live in the next town over.

I say Asiatown because Flushing not only has a concentration of Chinese shops, restaurants, and other establishments, but it also houses numerous (and I mean numerous) Korean, Japanese, Thai, and Vietnamese businesses as well. It’s totally worth a trip over to Flushing because when you do arrive, it’s like you walk into the downtown section of an East Asian country- the language on signs change to characters and vendor after vendor sell a different variety of exotic foods and goods. Swedish 9-Year-Old Milla Martin Raises Money for Famine Victims with Cinnamon Buns

While many times we see or hear news about atrocities in other countries, most of us can be accused of apathy due to our lack of effort to actually try and help. When news broke out of the famine in the Horn of Africa, many chipped in with donations for the famine victims upon hearing of the millions that would be affected.

Even our own Marcus Samuelsson hosted a brunch in this own home to raise fund for the afflicted which was then brought directly to those suffering by his lovely wife Maya.

Aside from his strong philanthropic leaning, clearly Marcus’ strong ties and origin from Ethiopia would draw his attention and earnest to help. But few times do we see someone with no direct connection pitch in to help remedy a situation (Kony campaign aside).

Thankfully, this was not the case for 9-year-old Milla Martin from Sweden. So moved from news stories and photographs of children, like herself, starving in Africa, Milla launched her own campaign to raise money for famine victims in Ethiopia. Through the sales of her cinnamon buns and calling for hundreds of Swedish children to join in the campaign, Milla was able to collect more than 200.000 Kronor (about $35,000) to help the starving children in Africa.
