On behalf of our entire team at Red Rooster, I would like to thank First Lady Michelle Obama for asking us to be part of the Luncheon on the occasion of the 68th United Nations General Assembly. Even though I personally was unable to attend, it was an honor to have our team welcome the First Lady and her guests to The Studio Museum and share with them the food, the art and the neighborhood that I call home. The day is guaranteed to go well when I start my day doing a demo with First Lady Michelle Obama. In town to celebrate the third anniversary of her Let’s Move campaign, I was with her on Good Morning America to discuss healthy dishes that families can make together. Promoting the USDA’s My Plate format for better dietary guidelines, the First Lady discussed how My Plate will be partnering with several online recipe sites to highlight dishes that follow the My Plate format.  Read More

White House Easter Egg Roll

White House Easter Egg Roll

Yesterday morning I found myself walking from my hotel down to the White House. I decided to walk the short distance because it was a time to spend with my thoughts, and I wanted to take in the moment. I was in D.C. for the White House Easter Egg Roll, invited to do a cooking demo with the Obamas and 30,000 invited guests.

The White House never ceases to amaze me. Although I’d been there many times before, most memorably when I was invited to join Executive Chef Christeta Comerford for the State Dinner honoring Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, I still get chills when I see this historical landmark. I love the process of going through security and showing my passport to receive my credentials. Ask the people who were in line to greet the President-Julianne Moore, Forest Whitaker, numerous sports greats and celebrities-they were as giddy as the children there to meet the Easter Bunny. Obesity isn’t just a health issue that has plagued children. Last week, First Lady Michelle Obama noted that it has also become a health risk and even a national security hazard among members of the military. In addition to her effort to provide healthier lunch for kids, Obama wants to take part in overhauling the military’s food services.

According to Reuters, Obama announced a new nutritional awareness campaign to battle obesity that will change the nutrition standards for the first time in 20 years.

“The military is always taking the lead in terms of setting standards,” said Jonathan Woodson, Assistant U.S. Secretary of Defense for Health Affairs. Read More

Last week, First Lady Michelle Obama joined several Top Chef celebrity chefs to promote healthy eating in Dallas. According to D Magazine, Obama made an appearance at the Kleberg-Rylie Recreation Center to promote her project Let’s Move. The initiative, which the First Lady proposed two years ago, focuses on battling obesity. Obama has been involved in several projects that aim to provide healthier food for children.

“Healthy food can be good and delicious too,” she told a group of students from Nancy Moseley Elementary School. “And that’s what we’re going to learn today.” The event featured a cooking competition among several of BRAVO’s Top Chefs and some of the students. Dallas Cowboys DeMarcus Ware and Miles Austin also took part in the event. Split into three teams, each team was required to design a meal that was both nutritious and delicious. Obama, celebrity chef Tom Colicchio and White House chef Sam Kass served as judges. Read More

While Michelle Obama may not be a chef, she seems to know a thing or two about the importance of using locally grown produce in everyday cooking. Her cookbook titled American Grown: How the White House Kitchen Garden Inspires Families, Schools, and Communities will be released nationwide on April 10th, 2012 by Crown Publishing and was just given a cover and a title yesterday. This cookbook provides recipes inspired by Obama’s White House garden- the first since Eleanor Roosevelt’s Victory Garden during WWII. The United States is finally focusing on new healthier lifestyles for children, much thanks to the Child Nutrition Bill and Michelle Obama’s drive to create a healthier America. First things first, noted in CNN’s “Obama Signs Child Nutrition Bill”, The Child Nutrition Bill was signed back in December by President Obama to “encourage better eating habits by giving the federal government more authority to set standards for food sold in schools.” The bill seeks to increase free healthy meals for children in low-income areas and requires schools to abide by the US Department of Agriculture’s healthy eating strategies. By implementing the Child Nutrition Bill schools are able to create healthier lunches one day at a time. Read More

President Obama's birthday

As you all know, this Thursday, August 4th will be President Barack Obama’s 50th birthday.
